ACT Accommodations: How to Request Extended Time

· 5 min read

This one trips families up for a reason that has nothing to do with the paperwork: the student cannot submit the request.

ACT states that schools submit accommodations requests on behalf of enrolled students. Your teen's part is to trigger it and sign a consent form. If nobody tells the school counsellor, nothing happens.

The deadline changed, and it got tighter

"Starting with the June 2026 test event: The accommodations request submission deadline will be the regular registration deadline."

That is a meaningful change. The accommodations request is now due at the same time as ordinary registration — roughly five weeks before the test.

Test dateAccommodations request due
September 19, 2026August 14
December 12, 2026November 6
February 27, 2027January 22
April 10, 2027March 5

And the sentence that matters most sits in the header of ACT's own deadline table:

"All requests, including appeals, must be submitted by the following deadlines"

Appeals share the deadline with the original request. So if you submit on the last day and it is denied, there is no room left to respond. Submitting early is not tidiness here — it is the only thing that preserves a second attempt.

The five steps, in order

  1. Register in MyACT, confirm the need for accommodations, and link the high school to the account. ACT is explicit that linking the school is what allows it to communicate with the school official.
  2. Forward the approval email to the school official, with a completed Consent to Release Information to ACT form.
  3. The school official submits the request through ACT's TAA system. The student reviews the decision notification with them.
  4. If approved for special testing, the student and school arrange the sitting together.
  5. Upload a photo and print the admission ticket.

Step 1 is where most delays start. A MyACT account with no high school linked cannot route anything to a counsellor.

What ACT says about documentation

ACT publishes its criteria in a separate policy document rather than on the registration page, so the honest answer is to read that policy rather than trust a summary. The two things it does state plainly:

  • Accommodations requested "should be similar to the accommodations you currently receive in school."
  • "Requests that do not include all required documentation, or that do not meet ACT's documentation criteria may not be approved."

In practice that means an existing IEP or 504 plan, consistently used, is the strongest ground to stand on — and that a request for something the student does not already receive at school is the hardest case to make.

Where the test actually happens

This is the part worth knowing before you plan the day:

  • Some accommodations run at an ordinary national test centre. ACT names time and one-half single session testing as an example, along with all English Learner supports.
  • Others cannot. ACT gives multiple-day testing as an example. Those are arranged with the school inside a special testing window.

And that window has shrunk:

"Starting with the June 2026 test event: The Special testing window will shift from a 2 week window to a shorter, nine day window which will include two full weekends for test administration."

Nine days, not fourteen. If your teen needs special testing, there is less room to reschedule around illness or a clash.

Two things families worry about that they needn't

It does not appear on the score report. Scores from accommodated testing are reported like any other scores. Colleges are not told.

It does not change the scholarship grid. An approved accommodation changes testing conditions, not eligibility. The score counts exactly the same against a merit threshold as any other score.

What we would do

Start a full test date earlier than you think you need to. The request is due five weeks before the test, the school has to act in between, and an appeal shares the same deadline. Working back from a December 1 scholarship deadline, that means beginning the conversation with the counsellor in September, not November.

Ask the counsellor one specific question: "Have you submitted an ACT accommodations request through TAA before?" Schools that do this routinely move fast. Schools that have not will need lead time, and it is better to learn that in September.

Where this came from

Every quotation on this page is from ACT's own accommodations page, read on 19 October 2026: ACT, "Accommodations". ACT's detailed documentation criteria and the full list of allowable accommodations live in separate PDFs linked from that page, and we have not reproduced them here because they change and because getting one wrong would be worse than sending you to the source.

This is a summary of a published process, not advice about a specific student's eligibility.

Frequently asked questions

Who requests ACT accommodations — the student or the school?

The school. ACT states that schools submit accommodations requests on behalf of enrolled students. The student's part is to confirm the need during registration in MyACT, link their high school to the account, and forward an approval email with a signed Consent to Release Information form to their school official. The school official then submits through ACT's TAA system.

What is the deadline to request ACT accommodations?

Starting with the June 2026 test event, the accommodations request deadline is the same as the regular registration deadline. For the September 19, 2026 test that was August 14. Appeals must meet the same deadline as initial requests, so a late denial leaves no room to respond.

What documentation does ACT require for accommodations?

ACT publishes its criteria in a separate policy document rather than on the registration page, and warns that requests without all required documentation, or that do not meet its documentation criteria, may not be approved. The guiding principle it does state is that accommodations requested should be similar to those the student already receives in school.

Can my child take the ACT with extended time at a normal test centre?

Sometimes. ACT says some accommodations, such as time and one-half single session testing, may be administered at national test centres. Others, like multiple-day testing, cannot, and the student tests during a special testing window arranged with their school instead.

What happens if an ACT accommodations request is denied?

ACT directs students to review the decision notification with their school official. Appeals exist, but ACT's own deadline table states that all requests including appeals must be submitted by the same deadline — so an appeal is only possible if the original request went in early enough to leave room.

Does extended time show up on the ACT score report?

No. Scores from accommodated testing are reported the same way as any other scores, with no annotation indicating accommodations were used.
