Merit Scholarship Deadlines: The Ones That Close Before You Notice
· 4 min read
The most expensive mistake in merit aid is not a low score. It is a score that arrives three weeks late.
Automatic merit awards run on published deadlines, and those deadlines are usually earlier than the admission deadline at the same school — sometimes by two months. Families who are on track for admission routinely miss the money.

The deadline is for the score being received
This is the part that catches people.
Auburn's published requirement is scores received by December 1, 2026. ACT reports most scores two to four weeks after the test date. A student who sits the December 12 test has not missed the deadline by a day — they have missed it by about a month.
So the working rule is: take the deadline, subtract four weeks, and that is your last usable test date.
What that means for 2026–27 test dates
| Test date | Scores land (approx.) | Makes a Dec 1 deadline? |
|---|---|---|
| September 19, 2026 | early–mid October | Yes, comfortably |
| October 17, 2026 | Oct 31 – Nov 14 | Yes — the last safe one |
| December 12, 2026 | Dec 26 – Jan 9 | No |
| February 27, 2027 | March | No |
The October sitting is the last date that reliably clears a December 1 deadline. After that you are relying on the fast end of ACT's reporting window, which is not something to plan a $36,000 award around.
Deadlines we have recorded
- Auburn — December 1, 2026, scores received, for merit consideration. Updated scores accepted until January 11, 2027 for additional consideration. February 1, 2027 regular admission is explicitly too late for merit.
- University of Alabama — December 4, 2026 for Summer/Fall 2027 entry. November 2, 2026 for Spring 2027 entry.
Note Auburn's structure: there is a hard date for the main award and a second, later date that only adds consideration. Those are not the same thing, and the difference is worth reading carefully on any school's page.
Check the published deadline on any school's grid
→Three things to do this week
Find the earliest deadline on your list. Not the admission deadline — the merit one. They are often different and the merit one is usually first.
Subtract four weeks. That is the last test date that works.
Check whether the school says "received" or "taken." The wording is the whole thing, and schools differ.

And if the deadline has already passed
It is not necessarily over. Some schools accept updated scores for additional consideration after the main date, and some run a second round. But the automatic grid award — the one that needs no application and no essay — is generally decided on the published date, and a published rule is not something a financial aid office negotiates.
Which is the argument for working backwards from the deadline now, in October, rather than discovering it in January.
Frequently asked questions
When are merit scholarship deadlines?
For 2027 entry most automatic merit deadlines fall between November 1 and February 1, and December 1 is the single most common. Auburn requires scores received by December 1, 2026; the University of Alabama's Summer/Fall 2027 deadline is December 4, 2026. These are earlier than most families expect, and earlier than the regular admission deadline at the same school.
Does my ACT score need to be received by the deadline or just taken?
Received, at most schools. Auburn's published wording requires scores to be received by December 1. ACT reports most scores two to four weeks after the test date, so a score earned in early December can easily arrive after a December 1 deadline has closed. Work backwards four weeks from the deadline, not zero.
Is the December ACT too late for scholarships?
For 2027 entry at most schools, yes. The December 12, 2026 ACT reports scores from roughly December 26 at the earliest and up to January 9, 2027 at the four-week end. That lands after the December 1 and December 4 deadlines at Auburn and Alabama. The October sitting is the last one that reliably makes a December 1 deadline.
What happens if I miss a merit scholarship deadline?
At schools with automatic grids the award is usually simply not made — there is no appeal, because the threshold is a published rule rather than a judgement. Some schools accept updated scores for additional consideration after the main deadline; Auburn allows this until January 11, 2027. Check each school's wording rather than assuming.
What is a scholarship priority deadline?
The date by which an application and test scores must be complete for a student to be considered for the main round of merit money. It is usually earlier than the regular admission deadline at the same school, sometimes by two months, and missing it generally means the automatic award is simply not made rather than being appealable.
Can I send ACT scores after the scholarship deadline?
Sometimes, for reduced consideration. Auburn accepts updated scores until January 11, 2027 for additional scholarship consideration after its December 1 main deadline, but the wording matters: additional consideration is not the same as the main award round. Check each school's page rather than assuming a late score will be read.
