Western Michigan University: merit scholarships and what the school publishes
Western Michigan University awards automatic merit aid from published criteria. Awards start at a 3.0 GPA. Because the bands are steps rather than a slope, a hundredth of a GPA point is worth nothing inside a band and the whole step at the edge of one.
Enter a score and a GPA below to see which band it actually lands in, what that band pays, and exactly how many points the next one needs.

Both amounts are four-year totals expressed as ranges, and WMU never says what decides where inside the range a student lands — so the figure cannot be predicted from a transcript. Read as annual they would be four times too large. WMU's test-optional policy explicitly covers scholarship consideration, which means a submitted score is read but its effect is unquantified. Awards do not stack; only the highest-value one is given. Whether the GPA is weighted is not stated for these two awards.
Unweighted, as the school asks for it.

Example — an ACT 29 with a 3.60 GPA
Bronco Excellence Scholarship
$14,000 to $20,000 in total over four years — about $3,500 to $5,000 a year
There is no higher band to reach at this GPA — more points would not change the award here. They may still matter for admission, for honours programmes, or at other schools on the list.
Knowing where a score sits is the easy part. Moving it starts with knowing exactly which questions they're being missed, and why.

Does WMU superscore for scholarships?
Yes. WMU combines the best sections across sittings, which is worth doing given that a score may be what positions a student inside the published range.
“Doing so will allow WMU to use your highest subscores from any test date to superscore your total (SAT) or composite (ACT) score.”
So the number that matters here is your superscore, not your best single test. Work out your superscore and look that score up in the grid above — it may sit a band higher than the one you have been planning around.

WMU scholarship deadlines
| Entry term | Due |
|---|---|
| Medallion Scholarship | December 1 |
| Foundation Scholarship | February 15 |
Scores take roughly two to four weeks to arrive, and official reports sent to schools can take longer, so the last useful test date is several weeks before the printed deadline. Check which test dates still make it.
Where these numbers came from
Every figure on this page was read from Western Michigan University’s own published pages, linked below with the date we last confirmed them. We do not estimate a missing band or interpolate a value.
- Both figures are four-year totals, not annual amounts.
- Excellence works out to about $3,500 to $5,000 a year; Achievement about $3,000 to $3,500.
- $14,000 is both the floor of the Excellence range and the ceiling of the Achievement range, so the tier boundary can be worth nothing at the margin.
- At the extremes the two tiers are $6,000 apart over four years.
- WMU never says what positions a student inside either range.
- The GPA is read at the time of admission, so later grades cannot move it.
- WMU superscores both the ACT and the SAT.
- Awards do not stack — only the highest-value one is given.
- The Medallion Scholarship requires an interview, and the Foundation Scholarship needs verified significant financial need, so neither is a band here.
- The MI Neighbor Advantage award is limited to northern Indiana counties.

Frequently asked questions
What ACT score do you need for a scholarship at WMU?
Western Michigan University publishes a merit aid grid keyed to ACT score and GPA. See the tables on this page for the current bands.
Is WMU test-optional?
The same sentence covers scholarships, so a submitted score is read for money as well as admission. For merit aid the answer is different: no published tier names a score, yet WMU's test-optional policy explicitly extends to scholarship consideration — and the amount inside each range is never explained. A score is the most plausible thing positioning a student in that range, and WMU does not confirm it. Being admitted without a score and qualifying for money without a score are two separate questions.
Does WMU superscore the ACT for scholarships?
Yes. WMU combines the best sections across sittings, which is worth doing given that a score may be what positions a student inside the published range. Doing so will allow WMU to use your highest subscores from any test date to superscore your total (SAT) or composite (ACT) score.
When are WMU scholarship deadlines?
Medallion Scholarship: December 1. Foundation Scholarship: February 15. The application and the official score report are both due by that date, and ACT scores take roughly two to four weeks to arrive — so the last useful test date is several weeks earlier than the deadline suggests.

You know what a score is worth at WMU. The question is whether you can move it.
A grid tells you the target. It does not tell you which questions are costing the points between here and there. That takes about three minutes to find out.
