Angelo State University: merit scholarships by ACT score

Verified Oct 21, 20262026-27 entrySan Angelo, TX

Angelo State University awards automatic merit aid from a published grid crossing ACT score with GPA. Awards start at an ACT of 21 and reach $10,000 a year. Because the bands are steps rather than a slope, one point is worth nothing inside a band and the whole step at the edge of one.

Enter a score and a GPA below to see which band it actually lands in, what that band pays, and exactly how many points the next one needs.

Read this first

Two things to read before the numbers. Qualifying for ANY band makes a non-resident eligible to pay in-state tuition for the life of the scholarship — Angelo State publishes no figure for that, so it is not counted here, but it is usually worth more than the award. And the grid has a genuine hole: the top four bands all require a 3.5 GPA, while the bottom two require an ACT of exactly 22 or exactly 21, so a student with a 24 and a 3.3 matches no published band. Nothing is interpolated to cover it.

Example — an ACT 29 with a 3.60 GPA

ASU Distinguished Scholarship

$6,000 per year ($24,000 over four years) / year

About $24,000 over four years, if it renews.

What the next points are worth

1 more point (a 30) moves you to ASU Distinguished Scholarship — $8,000 per year ($32,000 over four years) a year. That is $2,000 more a year, or $8,000 over four years.

The question isn't whether a point is worth having. It's whether they can move it — which starts with knowing exactly which questions they're missing, and why.

Can you get merit aid at Angelo State without an ACT score?

Yes. Optional, and Angelo State says so for merit specifically — a test-optional applicant is still considered, reaching the bottom two bands through class rank or GPA instead. International applicants are the exception and must submit a score.

Read the two columns in the grid below as a trade. The same award is reachable either way — with a score at a lower GPA, or with no score at a higher one. A score is worth real money to a student whose GPA sits under the test-optional line, and worth little to one comfortably above it.

“If you apply as test-optional, you will still be considered for an ASU Distinguished Scholarship.”

Does Angelo State superscore for scholarships?

No. Angelo State never uses the word, but it defines the input it uses: 'The ACT score is based on your composite score.' It then encourages retaking the test as often as allowed to improve that composite — which is the single-sitting shape rather than a best-of across dates.

“The ACT score is based on your composite score.”

This matters more than it sounds. A student whose superscore crosses a band but whose best single sitting does not will be paid on the lower band. Look up your best single sitting in the grid above, then find what is costing you points on one test.

Angelo State scholarship deadlines

Admitted by this date for spring entryOct. 15

Scores take roughly two to four weeks to arrive, and official reports sent to schools can take longer, so the last useful test date is several weeks before the printed deadline. Check which test dates still make it.

Where these numbers came from

Every figure on this page was read from Angelo State University’s own published pages, linked below with the date we last confirmed them. We do not estimate a missing band or interpolate a value.

  • Qualifying for any band makes a non-resident eligible for in-state tuition for the duration of the scholarship. Angelo State publishes no dollar value for it, so none is recorded.
  • The hub page advertises up to $52,000 over four years, which is the $40,000 grid maximum plus $12,000 from the Honors Program add-on. The Honors award requires selective admission to that programme and is not part of this grid.
  • International freshmen must have a qualifying test score — the test-optional merit path is closed to them.
  • The renewal bar excludes dual-credit and transfer hours from the 24 required, which catches students who arrive with credit already banked.
  • Dropping below 12 hours before the twelfth class day cancels the disbursement and can leave a balance owing.
  • Withdrawing or sitting out a long semester can require reapplying, which Angelo State says permanently ends scholarship eligibility.
  • No National Merit award appears on any Angelo State page checked.
  • Angelo State is silent on the Enhanced ACT, and keys every band to the composite.

Check before you rely on it. Grids change by entry year and schools update them without notice. This page is a reproduction with a date on it, not a guarantee, and it is not financial aid advice. ClutchACT is not affiliated with Angelo State University.

Frequently asked questions

What ACT score do you need for a scholarship at Angelo State?

Automatic merit aid at Angelo State University starts at an ACT composite of 21, alongside the published GPA minimum, and reaches $10,000 a year at the top. The bands are steps rather than a slope, so the only score that matters is the next threshold above where you are now.

Is Angelo State test-optional?

Test-optional, with assured admission for the top quartile at no minimum GPA and score-or-GPA alternatives below that. For merit aid the answer is different: optional, and Angelo State says so for merit specifically — a test-optional applicant is still considered, reaching the bottom two bands through class rank or GPA instead. International applicants are the exception and must submit a score. Being admitted without a score and qualifying for money without a score are two separate questions.

How much is a 30 on the ACT worth at Angelo State?

On Angelo State's published grid for 2026-27 entry, an ACT of 30 with a 3.6 GPA qualifies for ASU Distinguished Scholarship at $8,000 a year, about $32,000 over four years if it renews.

How much is one more ACT point worth at Angelo State?

The most valuable single point on Angelo State's published grid is 26 to 27, at a 3.5 GPA: it moves the award by $2,000 a year, or $8,000 across a four-year degree. The same point is worth less at other GPAs, and most points move nothing at all — the grid steps rather than slopes, which is why the only score worth aiming at is the next threshold.

Does Angelo State superscore the ACT for scholarships?
