LeTourneau University: merit scholarships by ACT score

Verified Oct 23, 2026Fall 2026 entryLongview, TX

LeTourneau University awards automatic merit aid from a published grid crossing ACT score with GPA. Awards start at an ACT of 32 and reach $20,000 a year. Because the bands are steps rather than a slope, one point is worth nothing inside a band and the whole step at the edge of one.

Enter a score and a GPA below to see which band it actually lands in, what that band pays, and exactly how many points the next one needs.

At LeTourneau the ACT moves the money exactly once. Three of the four freshman awards are decided on GPA alone — $18,000 at a 3.85, $15,000 at a 3.3, $13,000 at a 3.0, no score needed and no application. The score appears only on the Presidential row, where a 32 on top of the same 3.85 raises the award to $20,000. So a score is worth $2,000 a year here, and only to a student who already has the GPA. Every threshold is published as a minimum, so none of these bands has a ceiling. The SAT (1430) and CLT (98) are alternatives to the ACT on that top row; only the ACT route is modelled. The full-tuition Heritage Scholarship is shown but never promised: it is invitation-only and decided by a competition weekend.

Founder's Scholarship

$15,000/yr / year

About $60,000 over four years, if it renews.

There is no higher band to reach at this GPA — more points would not change the award here. They may still matter for admission, for honours programmes, or at other schools on the list.

Knowing where a score sits is the easy part. Moving it starts with knowing exactly which questions they're being missed, and why.

Who's this for?
LeTourneau’s heritage scholarship competition — résumé submission is December 11, 2026 — 44 days. The next ACT is 12/12 and scores take up to four weeks, so they would arrive after that date. The score they has now is the one this deadline uses.

Can you get merit aid at LeTourneau without an ACT score?

Yes. Optional, and unusually precisely so. A score is needed for exactly two things: the $20,000 Presidential Scholarship, whose row requires '3.85 + 1430 SAT, 32 ACT, or 98 CLT', and the lower of the two Heritage invitation routes (a 3.6 GPA with a 28 ACT instead of a 3.8 GPA with no score). Every other freshman award is read off the GPA alone, which is why the Dean's, Founder's and YellowJacket bands each carry a testOptionalGpa equal to their own GPA floor.

Read the two columns in the grid below as a trade. The same award is reachable either way — with a score at a lower GPA, or with no score at a higher one. A score is worth real money to a student whose GPA sits under the test-optional line, and worth little to one comfortably above it.

“Scholarship applications are not required. An academic scholarship will be awarded upon acceptance.”

Freshman academic scholarships

All four rows are awarded on the strength of high school academics, with no scholarship application: 'Scholarship applications are not required. An academic scholarship will be awarded upon acceptance.' They are mutually exclusive — a student receives one row, not a sum of them. Additive money sits outside this grid and is listed in the notes: the Church Matching Grant (up to $1,000), the Missionary and Pastor Dependent Grant ($500 to $1,000) and the five stackable Heritage runner-up awards.

Does LeTourneau superscore for scholarships?

Not stated. The word 'superscore' appears nowhere on LETU's academic scholarship page, its institutional scholarships index, its first-year process guide, its enrollment checklist or the Heritage competition page. The Presidential row says only '32 ACT' and the Heritage qualification only 'a minimum 28 ACT', with no statement either way about whether that composite may be assembled across sittings. Ask admissions before deciding which sittings to send.

With nothing published, plan for the stricter reading: look up your best single sitting in the grid above, work out your superscore as well, and ask LeTourneau’s financial aid office which one they read before you count on the higher band.

Comparing schools? See which colleges superscore for scholarships — 66 of 501 commit to it, 52 say they do not, and the rest never say.

Scores take roughly two to four weeks to arrive, and official reports sent to schools can take longer, so the last useful test date is several weeks before the printed deadline. Check which test dates still make it.

Where these numbers came from

Every figure on this page was read from LeTourneau University’s own published pages, linked below with the date we last confirmed them. We do not estimate a missing band or interpolate a value.

  • The four freshman awards are mutually exclusive — one row, not a sum — but LETU is explicit that the Heritage competition awards stack on top: 'Additional participants will receive substantial scholarships up to $7,500 per year, which stack on top of the merit scholarships they have already earned.' The five stackable Heritage awards are the Mountain Mover ($7,000), Kingdom Builder ($4,000), Groundbreaker ($3,000), Trailblazer ($2,000) and Blueprint ($1,000). The full-tuition Heritage Scholarship is the exception and does not stack: 'If awarded the full tuition Heritage Scholarship, students can receive federal and outside aid but not additional institutional aid.'
  • The CHURCH MATCH is additive, not an alternative, and it is small and tightly timed. LeTourneau matches scholarship funds from a residential student's home church up to $1,000, the church has to file a Partnership Agreement form, and the money must be received by August 1: 'Commitments made after the August deadline will be considered as "Awards from Outside Sources" and will not be matched by the University.' It is first-time students only.
  • A second denominational award also stacks: the Missionary and Pastor Dependent Grant, $500 to $1,000 a year for dependents of full-time ministers or of missionaries serving under recognised mission boards. It needs a letter on official letterhead from a senior pastor, elder board, supervisor or mission board, and renewal requires the parent's verification-of-employment letter by August 1 each year.
  • The TEXAS TUITION EQUALIZATION GRANT (TEG) IS STATE MONEY, NOT LETU MONEY. It appears on LeTourneau's grants page because TEG exists specifically for Texas residents at Texas private colleges, which is exactly why families mistake it for an institutional award — it is not, and it is deliberately excluded from the grid above. It is need-based, awarded only after the financial aid application process establishes need, and LETU warns that 'Funds are offered on a first come first served basis and are limited.' Its renewal conditions are stricter than the academic scholarship's: undergraduates must be enrolled at least three-quarter time (9 credit hours a semester), complete at least 24 credit hours during the academic year and hold a cumulative GPA of 2.50 — against the academic scholarship's 2.0. TEG is disbursed in the fall and spring only, never summer.
  • The renewal GPA is 2.0, but the credit-hour condition is the one that bites: 'continuous full-time enrollment'. A student who drops to part time loses the award, and the check happens at the end of each spring semester rather than each term.
  • The transfer ladder is a different set of awards against a different number and must not be read off the freshman grid: Gold Academic Scholarship $12,000 a year at a 3.0 minimum cumulative COLLEGE GPA, Silver Academic Scholarship $10,000 at a 2.0, and a Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship of $3,000 on proof of membership. None of them uses a test score.
  • LETU's own summary of the range is narrower than the top row suggests: 'These scholarships range from $10,000/year to $20,000/year' — the $10,000 floor is the transfer Silver award, and the lowest a freshman can be offered on this grid is $13,000.
  • LETU is silent on the Enhanced ACT, and silent on whether it superscores. It also accepts the Classic Learning Test (CLT) as a third route alongside the SAT and ACT, at a 98 for the Presidential and an 88 for Heritage — worth knowing for students from classical and homeschool programmes who may have a CLT and no ACT.

Frequently asked questions

What ACT score do you need for a scholarship at LeTourneau?

Automatic merit aid at LeTourneau University starts at an ACT composite of 32, alongside the published GPA minimum, and reaches $20,000 a year at the top. The bands are steps rather than a slope, so the only score that matters is the next threshold above where you are now.

Is LeTourneau test-optional?

Test-optional for admission, stated in two places and with no conditions attached. The first-year process guide lists sending scores as an optional step, and the enrollment checklist repeats it. Students who do not submit a score are not asked for anything in its place. For merit aid the answer is different: optional, and unusually precisely so. Being admitted without a score and qualifying for money without a score are two separate questions.

How much is a 30 on the ACT worth at LeTourneau?

On LeTourneau's published grid for Fall 2026 entry, an ACT of 30 with a 3.6 GPA qualifies for Founder's Scholarship at $15,000 a year, about $60,000 over four years if it renews.

How much is one more ACT point worth at LeTourneau?

The most valuable single point on LeTourneau's published grid is 31 to 32, at a 3.85 GPA: it moves the award by $2,000 a year, or $8,000 across a four-year degree. The same point is worth less at other GPAs, and most points move nothing at all — the grid steps rather than slopes, which is why the only score worth aiming at is the next threshold.

Does LeTourneau superscore the ACT for scholarships?
