University of South Carolina: merit scholarships and what the school publishes
University of South Carolina publishes merit aid criteria as published criteria. Awards start at a 3.0 GPA and reach $6,000 a year. Because the bands are steps rather than a slope, a hundredth of a GPA point is worth nothing inside a band and the whole step at the edge of one.
Enter a score and a GPA below to see which band it actually lands in, what that band pays, and exactly how many points the next one needs.

USC publishes RECIPIENT AVERAGES, not minimums, and says so outright: its figures 'should not be interpreted as minimum requirements or guarantees'. Scoring the average does not qualify you for the award — half of last year's recipients were below it. Awards are allocated against a budget and an enrolment target. Only the four awards below state criteria you can actually hold USC to, and the GPAs USC quotes are weighted on a scale running past 5.0.
Unweighted, as the school asks for it.

Example — an ACT 29 with a 3.60 GPA
LIFE Scholarship (state award — meet two of three criteria)
$5,000 / year
About $20,000 over four years, if it renews.
There is no higher band to reach at this GPA — more points would not change the award here. They may still matter for admission, for honours programmes, or at other schools on the list.
Knowing where a score sits is the easy part. Moving it starts with knowing exactly which questions they're being missed, and why.

Can you get merit aid at South Carolina without an ACT score?
Yes. Optional for USC's own awards — but not for South Carolina's state scholarships, which USC flags separately. A resident chasing LIFE or Palmetto Fellows money is on a different rulebook from the one that governs USC's awards.
Read the two columns in the grid below as a trade. The same award is reachable either way — with a score at a lower GPA, or with no score at a higher one. A score is worth real money to a student whose GPA sits under the test-optional line, and worth little to one comfortably above it.
“The test-optional policy applies to students applying for general university and South Carolina Honors College admission, as well as to merit scholarships awarded by the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. The test-optional policy does not apply to state scholarships.”

South Carolina residents — awards with stated criteria
USC's tiered awards for residents are keyed to recipient averages and are not modelled. These are the ones with criteria a student can actually check themselves against.

Non-residents — awards with stated criteria
The $26,000-$30,000, $16,000-$18,000 and $6,500-$12,000 packages USC advertises are averages of last year's recipients and are deliberately excluded. Only one nonresident award states a criterion you can hold USC to.

Does South Carolina superscore for scholarships?
Yes. Yes, across all test dates — and notably USC superscores the ACT on English, Math and Reading only. It never names the Enhanced ACT, but a Science-free composite is what it already uses.
“If you choose to have your scores considered, we will superscore the SAT and ACT (ACT English, Math, and Reading sections only) regardless of when the exam was taken.”
So the number that matters here is your superscore, not your best single test. Work out your superscore and look that score up in the grid above — it may sit a band higher than the one you have been planning around.

South Carolina scholarship deadlines
| Entry term | Due |
|---|---|
| Early Action application | October 15 |
| Honors College and Top Scholar application | November 15 |
| Regular decision — required for merit consideration | December 1 |
| All credentials received | January 15 |
Scores take roughly two to four weeks to arrive, and official reports sent to schools can take longer, so the last useful test date is several weeks before the printed deadline. Check which test dates still make it.

- The headline ACT tiers are averages of last year's recipients, disclaimed by USC itself as not minimums and not guarantees. They are excluded from the grid for that reason.
- USC's quoted GPAs are weighted and exceed 5.0 — a '4.7 average' is not a 4.7 on an unweighted scale.
- Merit scholarships are awarded for the fall semester only, to first-time freshmen.
- Stacking is tightly limited: nonresidents may hold only one admissions merit award, except the Provost Scholars Award. State scholarships can be added to any university award.
- The Stamps, McNair and Horseshoe awards all require a mandatory interview and an in-person Top Scholar Weekend, plus a separate Honors College application by November 15. Forty-five Top Scholar awards are made a year.
- USC's financial-aid pages and admissions pages disagree on the test-optional end date — one says 2026, the other 2027. The admissions page is the one cited here.
- Palmetto Fellows money is reduced if total gift aid would exceed the cost of attendance.

Frequently asked questions
What ACT score do you need for a scholarship at South Carolina?
Automatic merit aid at University of South Carolina starts at an ACT composite of 22, alongside the published GPA minimum, and reaches $6,000 a year at the top of the 2 grids it publishes. The bands are steps rather than a slope, so the only score that matters is the next threshold above where you are now.
Is South Carolina test-optional?
Test-optional through the fall, spring and summer 2027 terms, for admission and for USC's own merit scholarships alike. For merit aid the answer is different: optional for USC's own awards — but not for South Carolina's state scholarships, which USC flags separately. A resident chasing LIFE or Palmetto Fellows money is on a different rulebook from the one that governs USC's awards. Being admitted without a score and qualifying for money without a score are two separate questions.
How much is a 30 on the ACT worth at South Carolina?
On South Carolina's published grid for the current cycle, an ACT of 30 with a 3.6 GPA qualifies for South Carolina residents — awards with stated criteria — LIFE Scholarship (state award — meet two of three criteria) at $5,000 a year, about $20,000 over four years if it renews; Non-residents — awards with stated criteria — Provost Scholars Award (National Merit Finalists naming USC first choice) at $6,000 a year, about $24,000 over four years if it renews.
Does in-state or out-of-state change merit aid at South Carolina?
Yes. South Carolina publishes separate grids: South Carolina residents — awards with stated criteria run $1,000 to $5,000 a year, and Non-residents — awards with stated criteria run $6,000 to $6,000 — a difference of $1,000 a year at the top. Check which grid applies to you before planning around a figure.
Does South Carolina superscore the ACT for scholarships?
Yes. Yes, across all test dates — and notably USC superscores the ACT on English, Math and Reading only. It never names the Enhanced ACT, but a Science-free composite is what it already uses. If you choose to have your scores considered, we will superscore the SAT and ACT (ACT English, Math, and Reading sections only) regardless of when the exam was taken.
When are South Carolina scholarship deadlines?
Early Action application: October 15. Honors College and Top Scholar application: November 15. Regular decision — required for merit consideration: December 1. All credentials received: January 15. The application and the official score report are both due by that date, and ACT scores take roughly two to four weeks to arrive — so the last useful test date is several weeks earlier than the deadline suggests.
