Western Illinois University: merit scholarships by GPA

Verified Oct 23, 20262027-28 entryACT not used for meritMacomb, IL

Western Illinois University awards automatic merit aid from a published grid keyed to GPA — the ACT is not used. Awards start at a 3.0 GPA and reach $6,000 a year. Because the bands are steps rather than a slope, a hundredth of a GPA point is worth nothing inside a band and the whole step at the edge of one.

Enter a GPA below to see which band it actually lands in, what that band pays, and what the next band needs.

No test score is used — WIU's freshman merit page never mentions the ACT or SAT. Both figures are ceilings: the table says 'Up to', WIU's own page summary says amounts 'may vary up to $6,000', and awarding stops when funds are exhausted. A current-year FAFSA, or the Alternative Application for Illinois Financial Aid, is required before the semester of award or the scholarship is not paid at all.

AIM HIGH Western Commitment Scholarship

Up to $6,000 / year

About $24,000 over four years, if it renews.

Western Illinois awards this on GPA alone, so an ACT score does not change it. A higher score can still matter for admission, for honours programmes, and at other schools on the list — but not for this award.

The ACT doesn't move the money here — but it still decides admission, honours eligibility, and what they is worth at the other schools on the list, where most awards are score-keyed.

Who's this for?
Western Illinois’s president's scholarship application in the scholarship portal is December 15, 2026. The next ACT is 12/12 and scores take up to four weeks, so they would arrive after that date. The score they has now is the one this deadline uses.

AIM HIGH Western Commitment Scholarships

Awarded on the final, official high school transcript with no separate application. Both bands are reachable with no test score, because WIU uses none. Full-time enrolment and a current-year FAFSA or Alternative Application for Illinois Financial Aid are required.

Does Western Illinois superscore for scholarships?

Not stated. The word does not appear on WIU's Western Commitment page, which never mentions the ACT or SAT at all — and it is moot, because no WIU merit band uses a score.

With nothing published, plan for the stricter reading: look up your best single sitting in the grid above, work out your superscore as well, and ask Western Illinois’s financial aid office which one they read before you count on the higher band.

Where these numbers came from

Every figure on this page was read from Western Illinois University’s own published pages, linked below with the date we last confirmed them. We do not estimate a missing band or interpolate a value.

  • No ACT or SAT score affects this award. A 36 and a 19 are worth the same at WIU; the GPA from the final high school transcript is the only criterion published.
  • The FAFSA is a hard gate, not a formality. Without a current-year FAFSA or the Alternative Application for Illinois Financial Aid naming WIU before the semester starts, the award is not paid however high the GPA.
  • Both figures are 'Up to'. WIU's own page summary says the amounts 'may vary up to $6,000', and awarding concludes when funds are exhausted — so neither number is a guarantee.
  • Domestic students only, and the award requires continuous full-time fall-and-spring enrolment; dropping to part-time ends it.
  • The President's Scholarship covers full tuition, fees, a double residence hall room and meal plan, but it is chosen by a selection committee on leadership and community engagement, needs a 3.75+ GPA and Honors Program enrolment, and publishes no dollar figure — so it is not in the grid.
  • Purple and Gold scholarships are a one-time tuition waiver of up to $1,000 earned by attending an on-campus admissions event, not by grades, and are not renewable.
  • WIU Bound ($1,000) and Local Leatherneck Housing (up to $3,000) are decided by which Illinois county a student lives in rather than by academics.
  • The page heading reads 2027-28 while the browser title and the URL still say 2026-2027. The figures recorded here are the ones published under the 2027-28 heading.

Frequently asked questions

What ACT score do you need for a scholarship at Western Illinois?

Western Illinois University publishes a merit aid grid keyed to ACT score and GPA. See the tables on this page for the current bands.

Is Western Illinois test-optional?

Optional. WIU's How to Apply page (the wiu-apply source below) lists standardized test scores among the admission materials and marks them '(optional)'. For merit aid the answer is different: not used. The eligibility column of the award table names a GPA and nothing else, and WIU states that the GPA it uses comes from the final high school transcript. No published WIU freshman award is keyed to a score. Being admitted without a score and qualifying for money without a score are two separate questions.

How much is a 30 on the ACT worth at Western Illinois?

On Western Illinois's published grid for 2027-28 entry, an ACT of 30 with a 3.6 GPA qualifies for AIM HIGH Western Commitment Scholarship at $6,000 a year, about $24,000 over four years if it renews.

Does Western Illinois superscore the ACT for scholarships?

Not stated. The word does not appear on WIU's Western Commitment page, which never mentions the ACT or SAT at all — and it is moot, because no WIU merit band uses a score.

When are Western Illinois scholarship deadlines?

Priority deadline to apply for admission (summer/fall 2027): April 15, 2027. Register for classes (summer/fall 2027): August 1, 2027. Priority deadline to apply for admission (spring 2028): November 1, 2027. President's Scholarship application in the Scholarship Portal: December 15, 2026. The application and the official score report are both due by that date, and ACT scores take roughly two to four weeks to arrive — so the last useful test date is several weeks earlier than the deadline suggests.

Is this Western Illinois scholarship data current?

Every figure on this page was read from Western Illinois University's own published pages and last verified on 2026-10-23. The sources are linked at the bottom of the page with that date. Grids change by entry year, so check the source before relying on a figure for a decision.
