Western Kentucky University: merit scholarships by ACT score
Western Kentucky University awards automatic merit aid from a published grid crossing ACT score with GPA. Awards start at an ACT of 30 and reach $7,500 a year. Because the bands are steps rather than a slope, one point is worth nothing inside a band and the whole step at the edge of one.
Enter a score and a GPA below to see which band it actually lands in, what that band pays, and exactly how many points the next one needs.

The ACT affects one band only: a 30 with a 3.8 GPA pays $7,500 instead of $3,500. Every band below a 3.8 says 'NO ACT/SAT REQUIREMENT'. WKU also refuses superscores — only a composite counts. And while the grid sits under a header reading 'AUTOMATIC SCHOLARSHIPS', WKU's FAQ page says offers are limited and depend on available funds. The page carries no cycle year at all.
Unweighted, as the school asks for it.

Academic Scholarship
$2,500 PER YEAR / year
About $10,000 over four years, if it renews.
There is no higher band to reach at this GPA — more points would not change the award here. They may still matter for admission, for honours programmes, or at other schools on the list.
Knowing where a score sits is the easy part. Moving it starts with knowing exactly which questions they're being missed, and why.

The published WKU merit aid grid
Reproduced in full from Western Kentucky University’s own pages for the current cycle. Nothing here is estimated: where the school states a benefit rather than a figure, that is what the table says.
Automatic academic scholarships
WKU publishes both halves of the 3.8+ band — with a score and without — so the price of skipping the ACT is stated rather than implied. The grid rows carry no award names on WKU's own page.

Does WKU superscore for scholarships?
No. No, and WKU answers the question directly in its FAQ. Only a composite counts, which means one strong sitting rather than a best-of across dates.
“No. Only Composite ACT/SAT scores can be used for awards that require specific test scores.”
This matters more than it sounds. A student whose superscore crosses a band but whose best single sitting does not will be paid on the lower band. Look up your best single sitting in the grid above, then find what is costing you points on one test.

WKU scholarship deadlines
| Entry term | Due |
|---|---|
| Admitted to WKU for the automatic grid | December 31 |
| Admitted for Cherry Presidential consideration | December 1 |
| Scholarship awards must be accepted | May 1 |
Scores take roughly two to four weeks to arrive, and official reports sent to schools can take longer, so the last useful test date is several weeks before the printed deadline. Check which test dates still make it.

- The ACT premium here is the single clearest in the dataset: $4,000 a year, $16,000 over four, for a 30 at a 3.8 GPA.
- WKU's Border State Scholarship reduces tuition to at least the Kentucky resident rate for students from Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Ohio, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia. It stacks, is automatic, and carries no dollar figure.
- Non-resident students outside those states get the Tuition Incentive Program, which WKU says cuts out-of-state tuition by nearly 50% without publishing an amount.
- The Hilltopper Guarantee covers full tuition but is last-dollar, Pell- and CAP-gated and Kentucky-resident only — a ceiling filled after other aid, not new money.
- A full-tuition waiver cancels a university scholarship: WKU says students may not receive both simultaneously.
- National Merit and Achievement semi-finalists receive $1,500, stackable. WKU publishes no finalist tier.
- Governor's Scholars, Governor's School for the Arts, Governor's School for Entrepreneurs and Rogers Scholars each add a stackable $1,500.
- WKU is silent on the Enhanced ACT, and every requirement is phrased as an ACT composite.

Frequently asked questions
What ACT score do you need for a scholarship at WKU?
Automatic merit aid at Western Kentucky University starts at an ACT composite of 30, alongside the published GPA minimum, and reaches $7,500 a year at the top. The bands are steps rather than a slope, so the only score that matters is the next threshold above where you are now.
Is WKU test-optional?
Conditional on GPA. At a 2.50 unweighted GPA or above a score is not required; between 2.00 and 2.49 a score is required, along with a Composite Admission Index of at least 60. For merit aid the answer is different: considered rather than required: four of the five automatic bands need no score at all. A score is what moves a 3.8 student from $3,500 to $7,500, and what earns an invitation to the Cherry Presidential interview. Being admitted without a score and qualifying for money without a score are two separate questions.
How much is a 30 on the ACT worth at WKU?
On WKU's published grid for the current cycle, an ACT of 30 with a 3.6 GPA qualifies for Academic Scholarship at $2,500 a year, about $10,000 over four years if it renews.
How much is one more ACT point worth at WKU?
The most valuable single point on WKU's published grid is 29 to 30, at a 3.8 GPA: it moves the award by $4,000 a year, or $16,000 across a four-year degree. The same point is worth less at other GPAs, and most points move nothing at all — the grid steps rather than slopes, which is why the only score worth aiming at is the next threshold.
Does WKU superscore the ACT for scholarships?
No. No, and WKU answers the question directly in its FAQ. Only a composite counts, which means one strong sitting rather than a best-of across dates. No. Only Composite ACT/SAT scores can be used for awards that require specific test scores.
When are WKU scholarship deadlines?
Admitted to WKU for the automatic grid: December 31. Admitted for Cherry Presidential consideration: December 1. Scholarship awards must be accepted: May 1. The application and the official score report are both due by that date, and ACT scores take roughly two to four weeks to arrive — so the last useful test date is several weeks earlier than the deadline suggests.
