Indiana University East: merit scholarships by ACT score

Verified Oct 24, 2026Current cycleRichmond, IN

Indiana University East awards automatic merit aid from a published grid crossing ACT score with GPA. Awards start at an ACT of 20 and reach $5,000 a year. Because the bands are steps rather than a slope, one point is worth nothing inside a band and the whole step at the edge of one.

Enter a score and a GPA below to see which band it actually lands in, what that band pays, and exactly how many points the next one needs.

Read this first

IU East's two pages disagree: the scholarship page prints two tiers stating that taking the SAT or ACT "is not necessary", while its test-optional page says IU East does require scores for merit awards. The scholarship page is followed here. The test-required and test-free tiers cover the same GPA ranges and IU East does not say whether they stack, so the higher one is assumed. A competitive deadline still printed on the page reads February 15, 2023, so parts of it are stale.

Example — an ACT 29 with a 3.60 GPA

Academic Achievement Scholarship

$5,000 a year, $20,000 over four, kept with a 3.0 IU GPA / year

About $20,000 over four years, if it renews.

There is no higher band to reach at this GPA — more points would not change the award here. They may still matter for admission, for honours programmes, or at other schools on the list.

Knowing where a score sits is the easy part. Moving it starts with knowing exactly which questions they're being missed, and why.

Can you get merit aid at IU East without an ACT score?

Yes. IU East prints the exchange rate twice: a 3.5 with a 25 is $5,000 a year against $2,500 for the same GPA without a score, and a 3.0 with a 20 is $3,500 against $2,000. A 20 is the lowest useful score and is worth $1,500 a year.

Read the two columns in the grid below as a trade. The same award is reachable either way — with a score at a lower GPA, or with no score at a higher one. A score is worth real money to a student whose GPA sits under the test-optional line, and worth little to one comfortably above it.

Admission-based scholarships

Two tiers read a score and two state that no test is necessary, at the same GPA ranges. Admission by March 1 is required, and the awards run four years at full-time enrolment.

Does IU East superscore for scholarships?

Not stated. With thresholds at 25 and 20, a student near either should ask directly.

With nothing published, plan for the stricter reading: look up your best single sitting in the grid above, work out your superscore as well, and ask IU East’s financial aid office which one they read before you count on the higher band.

IU East scholarship deadlines

Scores take roughly two to four weeks to arrive, and official reports sent to schools can take longer, so the last useful test date is several weeks before the printed deadline. Check which test dates still make it.

Where these numbers came from

Every figure on this page was read from Indiana University East’s own published pages, linked below with the date we last confirmed them. We do not estimate a missing band or interpolate a value.

  • A 3.5 with a 25 is $5,000 a year; the same 3.5 with no score is $2,500.
  • A 3.0 with a 20 is $3,500; the same 3.0 with no score is $2,000.
  • So the ACT is worth half the award at the top tier and $1,500 a year at the lower one.
  • A 20 is the lowest useful score on this grid.
  • IU East's test-optional page contradicts its scholarship page about whether scores are required for merit.
  • The renewal bar is lower for the smaller awards — 2.75 against 3.0.
  • Admission by March 1 is required for consideration.
  • The $1,000 Red Wolves award is first-come, first-served and not guaranteed, so it is not a band here.
  • The Distinguished and Outstanding Scholars awards, at $6,000 and $4,000 a year, are competitive.

Check before you rely on it. Grids change by entry year and schools update them without notice. This page is a reproduction with a date on it, not a guarantee, and it is not financial aid advice. ClutchACT is not affiliated with Indiana University East.

Frequently asked questions

What ACT score do you need for a scholarship at IU East?

Automatic merit aid at Indiana University East starts at an ACT composite of 20, alongside the published GPA minimum, and reaches $5,000 a year at the top. The bands are steps rather than a slope, so the only score that matters is the next threshold above where you are now.

Is IU East test-optional?

Not providing a score is explicitly costless for admission — but not for the money. For merit aid the answer is different: iU East prints the exchange rate twice: a 3.5 with a 25 is $5,000 a year against $2,500 for the same GPA without a score, and a 3.0 with a 20 is $3,500 against $2,000. A 20 is the lowest useful score and is worth $1,500 a year. Being admitted without a score and qualifying for money without a score are two separate questions.

How much is a 30 on the ACT worth at IU East?

On IU East's published grid for the current cycle, an ACT of 30 with a 3.6 GPA qualifies for Academic Achievement Scholarship at $5,000 a year, about $20,000 over four years if it renews.

How much is one more ACT point worth at IU East?

The most valuable single point on IU East's published grid is 24 to 25, at a 3.5 GPA: it moves the award by $2,500 a year, or $10,000 across a four-year degree. The same point is worth less at other GPAs, and most points move nothing at all — the grid steps rather than slopes, which is why the only score worth aiming at is the next threshold.

Does IU East superscore the ACT for scholarships?

Not stated. With thresholds at 25 and 20, a student near either should ask directly.

When are IU East scholarship deadlines?

Admission for scholarship consideration: March 1. The application and the official score report are both due by that date, and ACT scores take roughly two to four weeks to arrive — so the last useful test date is several weeks earlier than the deadline suggests.
