New Mexico State University: merit scholarships by GPA

Verified Oct 21, 2026Current cycleACT not used for meritLas Cruces, NM

New Mexico State University awards automatic merit aid from a published grid keyed to GPA — the ACT is not used. Awards start at a 3.5 GPA and reach $4,000 a year. Because the bands are steps rather than a slope, a hundredth of a GPA point is worth nothing inside a band and the whole step at the edge of one.

Enter a GPA below to see which band it actually lands in, what that band pays, and what the next band needs.

Every NMSU scholarship is stated as a GPA band 'or an Academic Index' — and NMSU does not publish how the Academic Index is calculated, so no ACT threshold can be derived for any of them. A score can only help, never hurt. NMSU also warns that 'scholarships have limited availability and are only awarded in the fall', a student may hold only one institutional scholarship, and the page carries no entry year at all.

Example — a 3.60 GPA

1888 Leadership Scholarship

$2,000 / year

About $8,000 over four years, if it renews.

NMSU awards this on GPA alone, so an ACT score does not change it. A higher score can still matter for admission, for honours programmes, and at other schools on the list — but not for this award.

The ACT doesn't move the money here — but it still decides admission, honours eligibility, and what they is worth at the other schools on the list, where most awards are score-keyed.

Can you get merit aid at NMSU without an ACT score?

Yes. Optional and upside-only: a submitted score can move a student into a higher award through the Academic Index, and can never lower one. What it cannot do is be planned around, because the index is unpublished.

Read the two columns in the grid below as a trade. The same award is reachable either way — with a score at a lower GPA, or with no score at a higher one. A score is worth real money to a student whose GPA sits under the test-optional line, and worth little to one comfortably above it.

“These scholarships are test-optional and allow students to submit test scores to see if they qualify for a higher scholarship.”

    Does NMSU superscore for scholarships?

Not stated. The word does not appear anywhere on NMSU's scholarship page, so no position is recorded.

With nothing published, plan for the stricter reading: look up your best single sitting in the grid above, work out your superscore as well, and ask NMSU’s financial aid office which one they read before you count on the higher band.

    NMSU scholarship deadlines

    Entry termDue
Scholarship credentials and ACT/SAT scores on fileDecember 1 (no year printed)
Honors College priority deadlineDecember 1 (no year printed)

Scores take roughly two to four weeks to arrive, and official reports sent to schools can take longer, so the last useful test date is several weeks before the printed deadline. Check which test dates still make it.

    Where these numbers came from

Every figure on this page was read from New Mexico State University’s own published pages, linked below with the date we last confirmed them. We do not estimate a missing band or interpolate a value.

    • The Academic Index is the only route by which a test score reaches an NMSU scholarship, and its formula is not published — the on-page calculator is client-side script, not stated criteria.
    • NMSU does not round GPAs: it says they are 'acknowledged as the exact number documented in academic records', so a 3.895 is not a 3.9.
    • A student may hold only one institutional scholarship, though out-of-state scholarships and out-of-state tuition discounts do stack with each other.
    • Online students are not eligible for institutional scholarships or tuition discounts; the awards require 15 credit hours on the Las Cruces campus.
    • Colorado, Arizona, nearby Texas, Mexican-citizen and WUE-state students have their own tuition discounts that need no ACT at all.
    • The New Mexico Tribal Member discount is published as 'up to' $18,326, so no fixed figure is recorded for it.
    • NMSU is silent on the Enhanced ACT.

    Frequently asked questions

What ACT score do you need for a scholarship at NMSU?

New Mexico State University publishes a merit aid grid keyed to ACT score and GPA. See the tables on this page for the current bands.

    Is NMSU test-optional?

Not required. A 2.5 GPA, a 1060 SAT or a 21 ACT each satisfy admission on their own, so a score is one of three routes rather than a requirement. For merit aid the answer is different: optional and upside-only: a submitted score can move a student into a higher award through the Academic Index, and can never lower one. What it cannot do is be planned around, because the index is unpublished. Being admitted without a score and qualifying for money without a score are two separate questions.

How much is a 30 on the ACT worth at NMSU?

On NMSU's published grid for the current cycle, an ACT of 30 with a 3.6 GPA qualifies for New Mexico residents — 1888 Leadership Scholarship at $2,000 a year, about $8,000 over four years if it renews; Out-of-state students — 1888 Leadership Scholarship Out-of-State at $2,000 a year, about $8,000 over four years if it renews.

Does in-state or out-of-state change merit aid at NMSU?

Yes. NMSU publishes separate grids: New Mexico residents run $2,000 to $4,000 a year, and Out-of-state students run $2,000 to $4,000. Check which grid applies to you before planning around a figure.

Does NMSU superscore the ACT for scholarships?

Not stated. The word does not appear anywhere on NMSU's scholarship page, so no position is recorded.

    When are NMSU scholarship deadlines?

Scholarship credentials and ACT/SAT scores on file: December 1 (no year printed). Honors College priority deadline: December 1 (no year printed). The application and the official score report are both due by that date, and ACT scores take roughly two to four weeks to arrive — so the last useful test date is several weeks earlier than the deadline suggests.

Is this NMSU scholarship data current?

Every figure on this page was read from New Mexico State University's own published pages and last verified on 2026-10-21. The sources are linked at the bottom of the page with that date. Grids change by entry year, so check the source before relying on a figure for a decision.
