Ohio University: merit scholarships by GPA

Verified Oct 21, 2026Fall 2027 entryACT not used for meritAthens, OH

Ohio University awards automatic merit aid from a published grid keyed to GPA — the ACT is not used. Awards start at a 3.0 GPA and reach $2,000 a year. Because the bands are steps rather than a slope, a hundredth of a GPA point is worth nothing inside a band and the whole step at the edge of one.

Enter a GPA below to see which band it actually lands in, what that band pays, and what the next band needs.

No ACT threshold exists anywhere in Ohio University's merit aid. Merit runs on the cumulative GPA, and OHIO states that a score will be considered 'only if doing so increases a student's award eligibility' — a one-way ratchet that can help and cannot hurt. Only one award is guaranteed: the $2,000 renewable OHIO Admission Promise Award at a 3.0 GPA, and it additionally requires an application by the November 15, 2026 Early Action deadline and FAFSA results by January 15, 2027. Every other OHIO award 'varies according to academic merit' with no published band, so none of them are modelled. Athens campus only; students on F-1 or J-1 visas cannot file a FAFSA and so are ineligible.

OHIO Admission Promise Award

$2,000 renewable, awarded automatically / year

About $8,000 over four years, if it renews.

Ohio University awards this on GPA alone, so an ACT score does not change it. A higher score can still matter for admission, for honours programmes, and at other schools on the list — but not for this award.

The ACT doesn't move the money here — but it still decides admission, honours eligibility, and what they is worth at the other schools on the list, where most awards are score-keyed.

Who's this for?
Ohio University’s early action application deadline, required for the admission promise award is November 15, 2026 — 18 days. The next ACT is 12/12 and scores take up to four weeks, so they would arrive after that date. The score they has now is the one this deadline uses.

Reproduced in full from Ohio University’s own pages for Fall 2027 entry. Nothing here is estimated: where the school states a benefit rather than a figure, that is what the table says.

OHIO Admission Promise Award

The only figure OHIO guarantees. Awarded automatically on admission with no scholarship application — but the November 15 Early Action deadline and the January 15 FAFSA date are both hard requirements, so this is one of the few awards in this dataset a 4.0 student can lose purely by applying late.

Does Ohio University superscore for scholarships?

Not stated, and close to moot. With no score threshold to clear, there is nothing for a superscore to unlock — though since a score can only raise an award, submitting the best one a student has is the right move either way.

With nothing published, plan for the stricter reading: look up your best single sitting in the grid above, work out your superscore as well, and ask Ohio University’s financial aid office which one they read before you count on the higher band.

Scores take roughly two to four weeks to arrive, and official reports sent to schools can take longer, so the last useful test date is several weeks before the printed deadline. Check which test dates still make it.

Where these numbers came from

Every figure on this page was read from Ohio University’s own published pages, linked below with the date we last confirmed them. We do not estimate a missing band or interpolate a value.

  • The ratchet is the finding: a score at OHIO can raise an award and cannot lower one. OHIO states that if a student's eligibility would be stronger without the tests already on file, the scores are not considered.
  • The $2,000 is described as a floor — OHIO says 'at minimum, a renewable $2,000 OHIO Admission Promise Award'.
  • Admission to the Promise itself is automatic at a 3.0 with the published 16-unit college prep curriculum; applicants with a different curriculum are still reviewed holistically.
  • The curriculum is specific: 4 units of English, 4 of math including Algebra II or above, 3 each of science and social studies, 2 of foreign language, 1 of visual or performing arts, 4 electives.
  • A FAFSA is required for this award but financial need is not — OHIO says so explicitly.
  • The award may not be combined with some University scholarships, full-tuition Educational Benefits, or any other award valued at full in-state tuition.
  • Athens campus only. The regional campuses run a separate OHIO Regional Promise, and international students on F-1 or J-1 visas are ineligible because they cannot file a FAFSA.
  • Nonresident awards 'vary up to $7,000 according to academic merit' with no published band, so no nonresident track is modelled.
  • OHIO publishes a freshman middle-50% ACT range of 23-28. That describes the enrolled class and is not a scholarship threshold.
  • Ohio University is silent on the Enhanced ACT.

Frequently asked questions

What ACT score do you need for a scholarship at Ohio University?

Ohio University publishes a merit aid grid keyed to ACT score and GPA. See the tables on this page for the current bands.

Is Ohio University test-optional?

A permanent test-optional pathway for freshman admission to the Athens campus, and OHIO commits in writing that nobody is penalised for using it. If a student applies test-optional and a score arrives anyway, OHIO says the score will not be considered at all. For merit aid the answer is different: not used as a requirement or a threshold. OHIO keys merit to the GPA and treats a score as a ratchet that can only raise an award, never lower it — and says test-optional applicants receive full scholarship consideration regardless. Being admitted without a score and qualifying for money without a score are two separate questions.

How much is a 30 on the ACT worth at Ohio University?

On Ohio University's published grid for Fall 2027 entry, an ACT of 30 with a 3.6 GPA qualifies for OHIO Admission Promise Award at $2,000 a year, about $8,000 over four years if it renews.

Does Ohio University superscore the ACT for scholarships?

Not stated, and close to moot. With no score threshold to clear, there is nothing for a superscore to unlock — though since a score can only raise an award, submitting the best one a student has is the right move either way.

When are Ohio University scholarship deadlines?

Early Action application deadline, required for the Admission Promise Award: November 15, 2026. FAFSA first-priority date, required for the Admission Promise Award: January 15, 2027. The application and the official score report are both due by that date, and ACT scores take roughly two to four weeks to arrive — so the last useful test date is several weeks earlier than the deadline suggests.

Is this Ohio University scholarship data current?
