TEXAS Grant requirements

The TEXAS Grant does not use an ACT or SAT score. It is need-based: a Student Aid Index at or below the published threshold, Texas residency, and either graduation in the top third of the class or a 3.0 GPA on a four-point scale.

No test score is involved, so an ACT retake does not move this award. It does move what Texas colleges pay directly, which is a separate pot of money.

No score needed here. Elsewhere it is worth money.

TEXAS Grant ignores your ACT. Texas colleges do not.

This is the distinction most families miss: a state award can be need-based or GPA-only while every dollar of a university’s own automatic merit still comes off a test score. At a 28 with a 3.5 GPA, 8 colleges in Texas publish an award on top of it.

TEXAS Grant questions

What are the TEXAS Grant requirements?

The TEXAS Grant does not use an ACT or SAT score. It is need-based: a Student Aid Index at or below the published threshold, Texas residency, and either graduation in the top third of the class or a 3.0 GPA on a four-point scale.

Does the TEXAS Grant require an ACT score?

No. No test score is involved, so an ACT retake does not move this award. It does move what Texas colleges pay directly, which is a separate pot of money.

Does an ACT score change what Texas colleges pay?

Yes, separately from TEXAS Grant. At a 28 with a 3.5 GPA, 8 of the 28 Texas colleges whose award charts we have read publish a figure, the largest being $35,000 a year at UDallas. That is the college's own money, not the state's.
