Northeastern State University: merit scholarships by ACT score

Verified Oct 21, 2026Current cycle · prior cycleTahlequah, OK

Northeastern State University awards automatic merit aid from a published grid crossing ACT score with GPA. Awards start at an ACT of 20 and reach $2,200 a year. Because the bands are steps rather than a slope, one point is worth nothing inside a band and the whole step at the edge of one.

Enter a score and a GPA below to see which band it actually lands in, what that band pays, and exactly how many points the next one needs.

The automatic grid on Northeastern State's page is dated Fall 2026 with a February 1, 2026 deadline, while the rest of the same live page has moved to 2027-28 — so these figures are real but belong to the prior cycle and should be confirmed before anyone plans around them. They are also TUITION WAIVERS rather than cash, capped at the tuition charged, and restricted to Oklahoma residents. Miss the February 1 deadline and Northeastern State says students 'will only be awarded if funds are available'. No renewal requirement is published at all.

Example — an ACT 29 with a 3.60 GPA

Collegiate Scholars

$2,200 per year, as a tuition waiver / year

About $8,800 over four years, if it renews.

There is no higher band to reach at this GPA — more points would not change the award here. They may still matter for admission, for honours programmes, or at other schools on the list.

Knowing where a score sits is the easy part. Moving it starts with knowing exactly which questions they're being missed, and why.

Is Northeastern State test-optional?

For admission, largely yes. A score is one of three alternative routes in, alongside a 2.70 GPA with a top-half rank or a 2.7 GPA in the required college-entry courses. Northeastern State notes these are set by the Oklahoma State Regents and subject to annual change.

For money, no. Required for two of the three automatic awards, and test-optional admits are explicitly excluded from the non-resident waiver as well. A family that reads “test-optional” and skips the ACT can be admitted and still walk away from every dollar on the grid below.

“Attained a composite score of 20 or higher on the ACT or similar acceptable battery of tests.”

Automatic Tuition Waiver Scholarships — Oklahoma residents

A student can hold only one of these, and must meet both requirements for whichever they claim. Northeastern State also stacks these with Oklahoma's Promise, which it states explicitly — unusual among the Oklahoma schools here.

Does Northeastern State superscore for scholarships?

Yes. Yes, and Northeastern State prints the sentence three separate times on its freshman page — but it must come officially from ACT rather than a transcript.

“Official ACT Superscores provided by ACT will be accepted for scholarship consideration.”

So the number that matters here is your superscore, not your best single test. Work out your superscore and look that score up in the grid above — it may sit a band higher than the one you have been planning around.

Scores take roughly two to four weeks to arrive, and official reports sent to schools can take longer, so the last useful test date is several weeks before the printed deadline. Check which test dates still make it.

Where these numbers came from

Every figure on this page was read from Northeastern State University’s own published pages, linked below with the date we last confirmed them. We do not estimate a missing band or interpolate a value.

  • Northeastern State publishes no renewal GPA or credit requirement — only a duration of four years.
  • The awards are tuition waivers, so a $2,200 figure reduces a tuition bill rather than arriving as money.
  • Oklahoma residents only, and a student may hold just one of the three.
  • Oklahoma's Promise stacks: Northeastern State says it 'will stack your Oklahoma Promise scholarships with our academic and institutional scholarships and tuition waivers'.
  • Its Honors awards show headline figures around $15,000, but those are packages of a tuition waiver, a $1,500 housing waiver and a small cash stipend, and they require an application and selection.
  • The Green & White band prints its range as '20-25 (1030-1220 SAT)' without the word ACT in the cell — only the SAT is labelled.
  • Non-residents outside Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri and Texas may get 50% of non-resident tuition waived at a 3.0 GPA with a 20 ACT, but that is a percentage waiver with no figure, and the freshman page contradicts it by saying out-of-state students get only foundation scholarships.
  • Northeastern State is silent on the Enhanced ACT.

Frequently asked questions

What ACT score do you need for a scholarship at Northeastern State?

Automatic merit aid at Northeastern State University starts at an ACT composite of 20, alongside the published GPA minimum, and reaches $2,200 a year at the top. The bands are steps rather than a slope, so the only score that matters is the next threshold above where you are now.

Is Northeastern State test-optional?

A score is one of three alternative routes in, alongside a 2.70 GPA with a top-half rank or a 2.7 GPA in the required college-entry courses. Northeastern State notes these are set by the Oklahoma State Regents and subject to annual change. For merit aid the answer is different: required for two of the three automatic awards, and test-optional admits are explicitly excluded from the non-resident waiver as well. Being admitted without a score and qualifying for money without a score are two separate questions.

How much is a 30 on the ACT worth at Northeastern State?

On Northeastern State's published grid for the current cycle, an ACT of 30 with a 3.6 GPA qualifies for Collegiate Scholars at $2,200 a year, about $8,800 over four years if it renews.

How much is one more ACT point worth at Northeastern State?

The most valuable single point on Northeastern State's published grid is 25 to 26, at a 3.25 GPA: it moves the award by $800 a year, or $3,200 across a four-year degree. The same point is worth less at other GPAs, and most points move nothing at all — the grid steps rather than slopes, which is why the only score worth aiming at is the next threshold.

Does Northeastern State superscore the ACT for scholarships?

Yes. Yes, and Northeastern State prints the sentence three separate times on its freshman page — but it must come officially from ACT rather than a transcript. Official ACT Superscores provided by ACT will be accepted for scholarship consideration.

When are Northeastern State scholarship deadlines?

Admitted for the automatic waivers (prior-cycle date as published): February 1, 2026. Early offer for students admitted by December 1: End of December. The application and the official score report are both due by that date, and ACT scores take roughly two to four weeks to arrive — so the last useful test date is several weeks earlier than the deadline suggests.
