Oakland University: merit scholarships by ACT score

Verified Oct 23, 2026fall 2027, winter and summer 2028 entryRochester, MI

Oakland University awards automatic merit aid from a published grid crossing ACT score with GPA. Awards start at an ACT of 23 and reach $12,000 a year. Because the bands are steps rather than a slope, one point is worth nothing inside a band and the whole step at the edge of one.

Enter a score and a GPA below to see which band it actually lands in, what that band pays, and exactly how many points the next one needs.

Oakland publishes two different grids at once — one for winter and summer 2027, one for fall 2027 onward — and the figures below are the fall 2027 grid. The earlier cycle pays $5,500 rather than $6,000 at the Distinguished level, $3,500 rather than $4,000 at Talented, and adds a $1,000-a-year University Recognition Award that the later grid drops. Check which cycle you are entering before planning around a number.

Academic Achievement Award

$2,000 / year

About $8,000 over four years, if it renews.

There is no higher band to reach at this GPA — more points would not change the award here. They may still matter for admission, for honours programmes, or at other schools on the list.

Knowing where a score sits is the easy part. Moving it starts with knowing exactly which questions they're being missed, and why.

Who's this for?
Oakland’s merit scholarship priority deadline, winter entry is December 1 — 34 days. The next ACT is 12/12 and scores take up to four weeks, so they would arrive after that date. The score they has now is the one this deadline uses.

Can you get merit aid at Oakland without an ACT score?

Yes. Test-optional for admission, emphatically not scholarship-optional. OU publishes a no-score route to only two of its five merit awards — the Talented Scholar Award at a 3.90 GPA and the Academic Achievement Award at a 3.00 — and both Presidential awards and the Distinguished award are unreachable without a score. A 3.95 GPA with no ACT is worth $4,000 a year; the same transcript with a 33 is worth $12,000. That $8,000-a-year gap, $32,000 over four years, is the entire case for sitting the test here.

Read the two columns in the grid below as a trade. The same award is reachable either way — with a score at a lower GPA, or with no score at a higher one. A score is worth real money to a student whose GPA sits under the test-optional line, and worth little to one comfortably above it.

“Students are not precluded from taking standardized tests (SAT or ACT) and sending scores if they are able. Doing so can support their institutional scholarship eligibility, as well as help them with course placement.”

The published Oakland merit aid grid

Reproduced in full from Oakland University’s own pages for fall 2027, winter and summer 2028 entry. Nothing here is estimated: where the school states a benefit rather than a figure, that is what the table says.

First-year students, fall 2027 onward

Automatic on the admission application — no scholarship application, and no essay required. Each award lists one to three routes, and every route pairs a GPA band with an ACT band, so you have to clear BOTH halves of a route to reach its award. You may hold only one academic merit scholarship (the Non-Resident Award is the single exception), and half the annual amount is released each semester.

Does Oakland superscore for scholarships?

No. No, and OU states it directly in the same sentence that describes how merit awards are set — a rare explicit answer in this dataset. Your single best sitting is what counts, so the strategy here is one strong test day rather than stacking section bests across several.

“awards are based on your academic record, including GPA and SAT or ACT score (if applicable), at the time of admission (test superscores are not considered at this time)”

This matters more than it sounds. A student whose superscore crosses a band but whose best single sitting does not will be paid on the lower band. Look up your best single sitting in the grid above, then find what is costing you points on one test.

Scores take roughly two to four weeks to arrive, and official reports sent to schools can take longer, so the last useful test date is several weeks before the printed deadline. Check which test dates still make it.

Where these numbers came from

Every figure on this page was read from Oakland University’s own published pages, linked below with the date we last confirmed them. We do not estimate a missing band or interpolate a value.

  • The jump worth chasing is 30 to 31. At a 3.90 GPA an ACT of 28–30 pays $6,000 a year and a 31 pays $9,000 — one point is $3,000 a year, $12,000 across four. The 32-to-33 step is worth another $3,000 a year on top of that.
  • A retake can still raise your award after you are admitted. OU says students may submit updated transcripts and/or test scores for scholarship reconsideration up to the March 1 scholarship priority deadline, so a February sitting is not wasted — but after that date the award is fixed.
  • Only one academic merit scholarship, ever. OU writes that "Students may only receive one academic merit scholarship (except for the Non-Resident Award, if applicable)", and the total of all OU institutional awards and tuition waivers cannot exceed the cost of tuition. Stacking two merit awards is not possible here.
  • The Non-Resident Award is the one thing that does stack, and it is not in the grid above because OU publishes no dollar figure for it — the amount is "In-state tuition rates", which the renewal chart describes as the difference between OU's in-state and out-of-state undergraduate tuition. It needs a 2.5 GPA, U.S. citizenship (citizens and permanent residents of Canada and Mexico may also qualify) and non-Michigan residency, and renews at a 2.00 GPA. For an out-of-state family this is likely worth more than the merit award itself.
  • The Michigan Achievement Scholarship is STATE money, not Oakland's, and it is deliberately absent from the grid. It matters here anyway: OU's Golden Guarantee — full tuition for a Michigan resident with family income at or below $70,000 and assets under $50,000 — requires that you are a Michigan Achievement Scholarship recipient, and the renewal chart requires "continued receipt" of it each year. So the state award is a gate on OU's largest need-based promise, and a family that confuses the two will mis-plan both. Neither is affected by an ACT score.
  • Platinum recipients get a second shot at full tuition: OU says Platinum Presidential Scholar Award recipients "are eligible to apply for this competitive scholarship, valued at full tuition" — the Pescovitz Presidential Scholarship. It is competitive and separately applied for, so it is not in the grid; renewing it requires the Platinum criteria plus staying enrolled in The Honors College.
  • OU publishes its renewal criteria as year-by-year Google Sheets linked from the renewal page rather than as text on the .edu site. Those charts also name two awards that appear nowhere in the published first-year criteria — a $10,000 Valedictorian Opportunity Scholarship and a Wade McCree award covering OU undergraduate tuition — so if either might apply to you, ask the financial aid office rather than relying on the public grid.
  • Missing the renewal GPA is survivable but not automatic. OU asks students with extenuating circumstances — a death in the immediate family, a serious illness or injury — to call a financial aid adviser for reinstatement consideration. There is no published grace semester.
  • An essay is optional at Oakland and OU says interested students "may choose to include an essay for consideration", but no published merit award turns on it. The money here is GPA and score.

Check before you rely on it. Grids change by entry year and schools update them without notice. This page is a reproduction with a date on it, not a guarantee, and it is not financial aid advice. ClutchACT is not affiliated with Oakland University.

Frequently asked questions

What ACT score do you need for a scholarship at Oakland?

Automatic merit aid at Oakland University starts at an ACT composite of 23, alongside the published GPA minimum, and reaches $12,000 a year at the top. The bands are steps rather than a slope, so the only score that matters is the next threshold above where you are now.

Is Oakland test-optional?

A score is not required to be admitted, and OU says the removal is permanent rather than a pandemic measure. Admission runs off the transcript: a cumulative high school GPA of 3.2 or above, with 2.5 to 3.2 considered on the quality of academic preparation. For merit aid the answer is different: test-optional for admission, emphatically not scholarship-optional. Being admitted without a score and qualifying for money without a score are two separate questions.

How much is a 30 on the ACT worth at Oakland?

On Oakland's published grid for fall 2027, winter and summer 2028 entry, an ACT of 30 with a 3.6 GPA qualifies for Academic Achievement Award at $2,000 a year, about $8,000 over four years if it renews.

How much is one more ACT point worth at Oakland?

The most valuable single point on Oakland's published grid is 30 to 31, at a 3.9 GPA: it moves the award by $3,000 a year, or $12,000 across a four-year degree. The same point is worth less at other GPAs, and most points move nothing at all — the grid steps rather than slopes, which is why the only score worth aiming at is the next threshold.

Does Oakland superscore the ACT for scholarships?

No. No, and OU states it directly in the same sentence that describes how merit awards are set — a rare explicit answer in this dataset. Your single best sitting is what counts, so the strategy here is one strong test day rather than stacking section bests across several. awards are based on your academic record, including GPA and SAT or ACT score (if applicable), at the time of admission (test superscores are not considered at this time)

When are Oakland scholarship deadlines?

Merit scholarship priority deadline, fall entry: March 1. Merit scholarship priority deadline, winter entry: December 1. Merit scholarship priority deadline, summer entry: July 1. Last date to submit an updated transcript or test score for scholarship reconsideration: The March 1 scholarship priority deadline. The application and the official score report are both due by that date, and ACT scores take roughly two to four weeks to arrive — so the last useful test date is several weeks earlier than the deadline suggests.
