University of Nebraska at Kearney: merit scholarships by ACT score
University of Nebraska at Kearney awards automatic merit aid from a published grid crossing ACT score with GPA. Awards start at an ACT of 22 and reach $6,000 a year. Because the bands are steps rather than a slope, one point is worth nothing inside a band and the whole step at the edge of one.
Enter a score and a GPA below to see which band it actually lands in, what that band pays, and exactly how many points the next one needs.

UNK requires a score for the money but not for admission — a 20 ACT is only one of four admission routes, while merit consideration needs official scores by March 1. Note two published inconsistencies: UNK states a 3.7 GPA gate and then asks 3.9 for the Chancellor's band, and states no GPA at all for Presidential and Regents. The awards do not stack — UNK says 'one of the following'. Renewal is capped at four years but the renewal GPA is not published; UNK defers it to the offer letter.
Unweighted, as the school asks for it.

Example — an ACT 29 with a 3.60 GPA
No automatic award at this combination
A 29 with a 3.60 GPA does not reach the published grid. That is not a verdict on admission — only on automatic merit.
What the next points are worth
3 more points (a 32) moves you to Regents Scholarship (Nebraska residents) — Full Tuition AND room waiver for campus housing.
The question isn't whether 3 points is worth having. It's whether they can move them — which starts with knowing exactly which questions they're missing, and why.

Is UNK test-optional?
For admission, largely yes. A score is one of four alternative routes in — a 20 ACT, a 1040 SAT, a top-half class rank, or a 3.0 GPA. UNK never uses the phrase test-optional, but a score is not required.
For money, no. Required. There is no GPA-only path into this ladder — the entry condition names both a 3.7 GPA and a 22 composite, and official scores must reach UNK by March 1. A family that reads “test-optional” and skips the ACT can be admitted and still walk away from every dollar on the grid below.
“Score 20 or higher on the ACT.”

Renewable merit scholarships
Mutually exclusive — UNK awards 'one of the following'. The award is set on the cumulative GPA at the end of the sixth semester, so junior-year grades decide it, and offers go out in the first week of February.

Does UNK superscore for scholarships?
No. No for the Presidential Scholars award, which the Nebraska system states outright. UNK's own four bands never mention superscoring, so the campus position on them is unstated — but the system award, the largest on the page, refuses it.
“We do not consider superscores.”
This matters more than it sounds. A student whose superscore crosses a band but whose best single sitting does not will be paid on the lower band. Look up your best single sitting in the grid above, then find what is costing you points on one test.

UNK scholarship deadlines
| Entry term | Due |
|---|---|
| Admitted, with official transcripts and scores received | March 1 |
| Scholarship application window | August 1 to March 1 |
| Offers sent to qualified students | First week of February |
Scores take roughly two to four weeks to arrive, and official reports sent to schools can take longer, so the last useful test date is several weeks before the printed deadline. Check which test dates still make it.
Where these numbers came from
Every figure on this page was read from University of Nebraska at Kearney’s own published pages, linked below with the date we last confirmed them. We do not estimate a missing band or interpolate a value.
- First-Time Freshmen Scholarships, Fall 2027verified 2026-10-21
- NU Presidential Scholars — the Enhanced ACT Science requirementverified 2026-10-21
- Undergraduate admission requirementsverified 2026-10-21
- The NU Presidential Scholars rule is the sharpest Enhanced ACT statement found anywhere: 'To qualify for the scholarship, students taking the "enhanced" version of the ACT must take the Science test.' Science is optional on that format, and skipping it forfeits a full-cost-of-attendance award.
- That award also refuses superscores and self-reported scores outright.
- The awards are mutually exclusive — UNK says a student is reviewed for 'one of the following'.
- The New Nebraskan Tuition Waiver pays the difference between resident and non-resident tuition for out-of-state students, needs no application and has no deadline or ACT requirement. It is a tuition programme rather than merit and is kept out of this grid.
- Regents is restricted to Nebraska residents; UNK does not label the other bands by residency.
- The award is set on the sixth-semester cumulative GPA, converted to a 4.0 scale — a strong senior year cannot raise it.
- UNK's Nebraska Career Scholarship is printed as 'Up to $8,000' in one place and 'up to $10,000' in another on the same page, so it is not modelled.
- Terms and conditions are linked only for Presidential and Regents, and the Regents terms are a PDF. The four UNK-named bands have no linked terms at all.
- Nebraska Omaha represents the same system Regents award at the same ACT 32 as explicitly competitive and not guaranteed, while UNK lists it without caveat. Same award, two campuses, two representations.

Frequently asked questions
What ACT score do you need for a scholarship at UNK?
Automatic merit aid at University of Nebraska at Kearney starts at an ACT composite of 22, alongside the published GPA minimum, and reaches $6,000 a year at the top. The bands are steps rather than a slope, so the only score that matters is the next threshold above where you are now.
Is UNK test-optional?
A score is one of four alternative routes in — a 20 ACT, a 1040 SAT, a top-half class rank, or a 3.0 GPA. UNK never uses the phrase test-optional, but a score is not required. For merit aid the answer is different: required. There is no GPA-only path into this ladder — the entry condition names both a 3.7 GPA and a 22 composite, and official scores must reach UNK by March 1. Being admitted without a score and qualifying for money without a score are two separate questions.
How much is one more ACT point worth at UNK?
The most valuable single point on UNK's published grid is 23 to 24, at a 3.7 GPA: it moves the award by $2,000 a year, or $8,000 across a four-year degree. The same point is worth less at other GPAs, and most points move nothing at all — the grid steps rather than slopes, which is why the only score worth aiming at is the next threshold.
Does UNK superscore the ACT for scholarships?
No. No for the Presidential Scholars award, which the Nebraska system states outright. UNK's own four bands never mention superscoring, so the campus position on them is unstated — but the system award, the largest on the page, refuses it. We do not consider superscores.
When are UNK scholarship deadlines?
Admitted, with official transcripts and scores received: March 1. Scholarship application window: August 1 to March 1. Offers sent to qualified students: First week of February. The application and the official score report are both due by that date, and ACT scores take roughly two to four weeks to arrive — so the last useful test date is several weeks earlier than the deadline suggests.
